In April and May 2015, a series of devastating earthquakes ravaged Nepal. More than 8,800 people were killed, and 850,000 homes were damaged or destroyed.

The situation six months after:

• Over 58,000 people continue to live in camps for displaced families
• An estimated 81,000 households will require assistance to survive the winter weather of freezing temperatures, snow, and ice
• 1,100 health facilities in the country were badly damaged or destroyed, further endangering the sick, elderly, injured, and pregnant women.
• 38% of families are still waiting for promised cash grants of $150 USD from the government of Nepal for their homes destroyed by the earthquake
• According to the Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (NeKSAP), 529,000 people remain ‘highly’ and ‘severely’ food insecure.

When Nepal finally approved its new constitution in early September 2015, groups along the Indian border were angered and imposed an unofficial blockade against their northern neighbor. Nepal imports nearly all of its fuel and food from India. As a result, construction and supplies direly needed for reconstruction are unable to be moved to rural areas.
